Help Them to Help YOU Lead

Announcing a Significant Approach to
Engage Your Staff. Today and Everyday!

From the Desk of:

Stephen Hobbs, EdD
25 July, 2007

Dear Leaders and Managers

The above mentioned statements are bold … and for great reason.

You see, I believe …

In every person there is a leader.
However, some people lead better than others.

To take it a step further …

In every leader there is an educator.
However, some leaders educate better than others.

Why is the connection between leadership and
education important in organizations today?

Because one of the common connectors linking people in workplaces is that they learn.

In whatever they do, think and feel – they learn something about themselves and those they work with. They learn how to do their work better. They learn how to make the organization better. They learn what the client wants? They simply learn everyday!

And where and when people learn, an educator is available.

  • The educator can be present or virtual ...
  • The educator can be the author of the book or a tape ...The educator could be a work colleague or supervisor ...
  • The educator can be your CEO or ED ...
  • The educator could be your client or vendor.

Essentially …

When you listen you learn, when you speak you educate.

Realizing this connection … and because you are someone who leads and/or is emerging into a position of leading whether formally or informally, you educate others in how they will follow you.

And therefore, you have a wonderful
opportunity to leave your legacy of leading!

Educating and Leading

When YOU link educating and leading for yourself you realize

  • the difference between being a good manager and being a great manager
  • the difference between being a good leader and being a great leader

When you teach and/or guide others along the strategic path of performance and productivity you can engage them in realizing

  • the difference between being a good employee and being a great employee
  • the difference between being a good group and a great group
  • the difference between being the best in the organization when they can be the best for the organization.

As you become a great leader who educates three important questions require your attention:

  1. What is your sense of employee engagement in your workplace today and for tomorrow?
  2. How are employee-related issues playing out in your organization each day?
  3. How can I engage my staff to be the best for the organization?

These questions and many others are asked every day in most organizations by leaders and managers looking to be great and doing what is better for the organization.

What is your understanding of your current Workplace Issues?

Employee-related issues affect organizational productivity and personal performance in positive and/or negative ways.

Out of the upheaval of downsizing, the intention is for new ideas, processes, and connections to arise. How is this done?

Out of implementing cultural transition, the intention is for people to find themselves rejuvenated and willing to take the organization to a new level. How is this done?

Out of your experience of employee malaise or employee/staff disengagement, the intention is to engage them in ways that heartened their work. How is this done?

Out of times of status quo, the intention is to prepare employees for what is to come. How is this done?

The answer to "How is this done?" ... using a combination of educating and leading ...

Consider the following highlights of today's workplace:

Statistics from the Workplace

~~~~~~~~~~
Various research companies have reported the statistics about employee engagement in the last 5 years. Here are a few examples:
From the Gallup Management Journal according to a recent Gallup Organization study (2000-2004), U.S. companies lose approximately $350 billion annually due to disengaged employees. From this same study these statistics on workforce engagement were reported.
29% of employees are actively engaged in their jobs
54% are not-engaged
17% are actively disengaged
~~~~~~~~~~

Melcrum (a UK Consulting firm) researched and wrote a report titled Employee Engagement that reported the following statistics about employee engagement in UK companies:

Who's doing it?
36% of companies have a dedicated program or initiative around employee engagement

What's the reality?
16% of those surveyed believe employee engagement levels are high within their organization

What are the drivers?
48% feel the actions of senior and front-line leaders are the single most influential factor in driving engagement

Where's the success?
90% of respondents agree that employee involvement schemes increase employees' awareness of the business and therefore have a positive impact on engagement

The bottom line:
50% of respondents report business improvements in employee retention and customer satisfaction as a result of employee engagement efforts

~~~~~~~~~~
People are a key component of any company’s ability to execute its strategies and achieve its goals. Companies who are able to better engage their people also deliver better business performance and return to shareholders. This holds true even more so for companies achieving double-digit growth (DDG). In fact, employee engagement at DDG companies (63%) exceeds average employee engagement at single-digit growth (SDG) companies by over 20%.
From the findings mentioned above, there is hope for emerging leaders and developing managers.
From your experience, is the Melcrum statement true?
… the actions of senior and front-line leaders are the single most influential factor in driving engagement
The answer, I anticipate is yes!
However, I am sure you have days when you wish you could do more for your staff.
Just as you have days when you wish the staff gave you more.
I know what you're experiencing.
I've been there, done that! And I have the T-shirts to prove it!
Advice from a Practitioner
For the past 20+ years I have been a workplace educator, leader and manager. And I continue to use a combination of educating, leading and managing tools and techniques in my two companies.
In addition, I research, share my thoughts and listen to what others share about works. And I encourage others to use the tools and tactics I have identified and demonstrate through my workshops and offer in my books and articles because I know they work.
And I understand you use your leadership and management tools and techniques to the best of your ability. And yet, you look to be better when and wherever possible.
I know you reflect on how it is working and how it isn’t working. You understand the frustrations in leading yet you seek the joys it brings to you and those you lead.
And if you are like other emerging leaders and developing managers, you are willing to learn from your mistakes and celebrate your successes.
I expect when you attend meetings or when sharing a coffee with a colleague you are chatting about how to do it better. I bet in some form or another you have asked this question:
How Do I Dare To Engage The Hands,
Heads And Hearts Of My Staff TODAY?
The answer is as simple as it is complex. That is why the answer is often missed within the workplace.
The answer to any 'how' question is .... 'YES, and'.
Let me ask the question again ...
How Do I Dare To Engage The Hands,
Heads And Hearts Of My Staff TODAY?
  1. The answer is YES, and …
    I draw a blueprint to engage the hands, heads and hearts of my staff.
  2. The answer is YES, and …
    I learn quick and easy ways to engage the hands, heads and hearts of my staff.
  3. The answer is YES, and …
    I share the proven tips, tools and tactics I learnt with my staff.
  4. The answer is YES, and …
    I use 9 Educating Approaches that help them to help me lead.
Stephen ‘Steve’ Hobbs holds his vast knowledge of different educator approaches very loosely. During the many years I have known and worked with Steve, he has generously shared his experience with me as he has instructed, coached and mentored me to apply various educator styles to the adult education I do. He is at home in outdoor settings as much as he is indoors, and I continue to apply many of the principles and approaches taught to me by Steve in my experienced-based outdoor team and leadership programs. I apply these principles and approaches because they work and my clients and students benefit from them.
As a fellow adult educator, I have great appreciation and respect for Dr. Hobbs’ work and his insights into “leader as educator”.  He models each of the 9 educating approaches in his curriculum design, facilitation and approach to life in general.  He models the way for others to best learn about leadership.
Webinar and/or eWorkbook
In bringing what I know to you I thought a 4-week webinar and/or 10 modular eWorkbook explaining and describing 9 educating approaches was the best place to start.
Why these resources … because you are busy, it is easier for you to arrange short blocks of time to listen and/or read
Why … to block small units of time also contributes to your learning retention because you can chunk the information into useable units to draw from later
Why … small blocks of time keep your workplace learning focused when around you there are many distractions
Why … it is one thing to know it, it is yet another thing to do it over time – reflection gets you ready, evaluation with others tells you if your actions are making a difference, therefore with your learning spaced out you have time to work your new ideas
Why … different workplace situations require different approaches as you lead or manage groups
Why … different people require different approaches because one approach does not fit all in every situation
Why … with options you move away from reacting in situations to responding to situations thereby drawing out the best of yourself for those you lead and manage
Why … with options, if an approach is not working, then you have back-up approaches that keep you in the rhythm of your leading and managing
From someone who read the eWorkbook:
Steve,
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to read your eBook on the 9 educating approaches helpful for leading and managing others.
I enjoyed reading the eBook (actually twice to get the full essence) and wish it was available earlier in my career.  I would have been much more effective in my educating approach.
The wonderful thing about the reading experience was that I knew the methods in general through other learning I have had, but it was never presented in a concise and organized manner as presented in this book.
I also found the terminology that you used in Modules 5 to 7 to describe the 9 approaches to be a lot more correlated to the concepts presented and because of that easier to remember when I encounter a situational leading/managing challenge.
The distinction between commitment and estimate presented in Module 8 actually took me by surprise. I now know why in the past I was disappointed in my ability to get some of the team members to deliver on the ‘promises’ they made. Obviously they were giving me their ‘promise of an estimate’ which I mistook for ‘commitment’. Well things are going to be different going forward – there will no doubt be clarity in expectations. The 7 major commitments cited in this module will no doubt provide an excellent reminder to me on a daily basis (I plan to put it them up on my desktop opening page until they are ingrained in my mind).
As I mentioned to you in our conversation, I am in the phase of my career, where I need to generate continuity of knowledge that would be essential to the emerging young leaders in my organization. This knowledge is gained from experience in the subject matter field such as regulatory reforms in transportation industry. There are no text books around that can be accessed by the young leaders to educate themselves. So at least for me, this book has arrived just in time. Connecting the leading and managing with the 9 approaches to educating is going to be a very productive process.
I learned about action mapping the first time at the leadership course. Module 10 solidified the concepts for me, particularly the 9+1 suggestions regarding starting with Self.
Steve, this book is exciting and well written. I am certain it will be a hit with the new generations of leaders.
Let me finish by sharing a quick note for those sales letters you will write:
Steve Hobbs’ presentation of the 9 educating approaches helpful for leading and managing stimulates the mind and will evoke a level of confidence in the minds of young emergent leaders. It’s a win-win approach for both the educators and their learners!
I thoroughly enjoyed the learning's of Modules 5 though 7, in particular the true definition/educational approaches of terms and how they can be used in a workplace setting. In all my readings, I have yet to come across a book that explains terminology and how they are used. These are extremely helpful tools! (I really liked jour Whitewater Rafting stories).
Your thinking …
“I know there’s a cost … what is it?”
Well, realize that this webinar could easily sell for hundreds of dollars. In fact if you asked a top leader who educates, like myself, to produce this workshop for you, you’d be charged in the neighborhood of $5000-$10000, not including workshop charges.
I currently charge a minimum of $3000 per day to share different approaches with leaders and managers. So at bare bones minimum you’re getting thousands and thousands of dollars worth of educating tools and tactics at your disposal.
However, I am not going to charge you anywhere near that project amount or even my daily rate. In fact, your total investment for the webinar + plus eWorkbook is only $359.
So what’s the catch? There is none. I simply believe in the product and I chose to share it with you because these educating tools and tactics are needed in creating the well-living workplace.
Because I believe in what I am offering, I will include the following bonuses if you order by September 30, 2007. Yours to keep – even if you decide to cancel!
Bonuses
A self-assessment form Are You Competent in Leading through Educating? that lists the 30 competencies used to develop the webinar and eWorkbook. Completing this form before the webinar offers you insight into what you know and do not know. With awareness comes preparation. ($15 value)
A copy of 9+1 Insights to Helping Others to Help YOU to Lead ($15 value)
A copy of my book Living YOUR Great Life. This book contains 139 thoughtful insights into what it means to live your great life. ($20 value)
A fifteen minute telephone call when you get to ask me any questions you want about leading and educating. ($500 value)
A copy of my eManual Ethical Decision Making. ($57 value)
Total = $507.00
Together these five bonuses add more value to your investment in the Helping Them to Help YOU Lead Webinar – however, they’re yours absolutely free when you order before midnight September 30, 2007.
Look at this way -- $359 is really a painless drop in the bucket compared to the money you’re going to waste on ineffective leading this year. That’s why …
Guess what, that same exchange is on the your staff’s mind.
However, they usually need you to take the first step. Then together you can work out the kinks and celebrate the significant successes.
In taking the first step, show them how a leader educates!
